Classic beef lasagna with garlic bread & salad
🧾 Ingredients (serves 4)
For the beef lasagna
• 250g lasagna sheets (no-boil or regular)
• 500g ground beef
• 1 small onion, finely chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 400g canned crushed tomatoes
• 2 tbsp tomato paste
• 1 tsp dried oregano
• 1 tsp dried basil
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 200g ricotta cheese
• 1 egg (for ricotta layer)
• 250g shredded mozzarella
• 50g grated Parmesan
• Olive oil for sautéing
For the garlic bread
• 1 baguette or loaf of Italian bread
• 3 tbsp butter, softened
• 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
• 1 tbsp chopped parsley
• Pinch of salt
For the salad
• Mixed greens (lettuce, arugula, spinach)
• Cherry tomatoes, halved
• Cucumber, sliced
• Red onion, thinly sliced
• Olive oil & balsamic vinegar (or your preferred dressing)
Method
1. Make the meat sauce
◦ Sauté onion and garlic in olive oil until soft.
◦ Add ground beef, cook until browned.
◦ Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes.
2. Prepare the ricotta layer
◦ Mix ricotta with egg, a pinch of salt, and a bit of Parmesan.
3. Assemble the lasagna
◦ In a baking dish, layer meat sauce, lasagna sheets, ricotta mixture, and mozzarella. Repeat layers, finishing with sauce and mozzarella. Sprinkle Parmesan on top.
4. Bake
◦ Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 25 minutes.
◦ Uncover and bake another 15 minutes until golden and bubbling. Let rest 10 minutes before slicing.
5. Make garlic bread
◦ Mix butter, garlic, parsley, and salt. Spread on sliced bread.
◦ Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes or until golden.
6. Prepare salad
◦ Toss greens, tomatoes, cucumber, and onion with dressing just before serving.
7. Plate and serve
◦ Slice the lasagna carefully and transfer to plates using a wide spatula.
◦ Add 1–2 slices of garlic bread beside the lasagna.
◦ Spoon a portion of salad onto the plate or serve in a small bowl.
◦ Garnish with extra Parmesan or fresh basil if desired.
◦ Serve warm and enjoy immediately.
💡 Tips
• For deeper flavor, simmer the meat sauce longer or add a splash of red wine.
• Use fresh lasagna sheets for quicker assembly and softer texture.
• Add a layer of béchamel for extra creaminess if desired.
• Garlic bread can be grilled for a crispier finish.
